PTC alpine trip.

Fresh snow quite low on the tops. Bit worried about the crossing, but proved OK. Used crampons for half hour near top of pass. Deep fresh snow on Temple side. Bit worried about avo danger. Missed the track entrance back into scrub in Temple, but have corrected track to show where we should have gone.

CTC trip. Doug, Sue, Bryce Williamson, Adam Bedford. Doug and Bryce completed the circuit while Sue went down and walked up Cons track to meet us.

Reasonable campsite but better 10 mins up valley.Had some stones piled up so probably where some stay. Pretty rocky camping though.Rough track through bush and scrub. Alma stream slowish travel. Had to climb over bluff in Rangitata because of high river level. Main valley very fast walking with 4WD track. This is the outwards track but travel time similar in either direction.Ridge harder than the map looks. Lots of spikes all of which were bypassed except the last one. Had to back track and find ledges down into gully N of ridge. Gully would be a much easier ascent route and I came down that way. When approaching the saddle at 2100m just hug tight under the bluff.

CTC trip. Doug, Jeff, Lynette, Catlin Case, Bill King. Perfect weather. Route straightforward. Last bit up to Pt1828 a bit steep needing a bit of route finding. Probably could have dropped into basin on other side a bit sooner.

Straightforward mostly. Ridge a bit narrow in places between 1778 and Mt Bealey. Great scree run down into Rough Creek. Rough Creek WAS rough especially in the upper reaches.Mostly stick fairly near the creek - mostly there was a way around the waterfalls. CTC trip Frank and Honora leading.

Short side trip from near Perth Col.

CTC trip of 7 incl Doug and Sue. Great day. Still a bit snow about on the shady faces and in places on the ridge. Missed the correct entrance into the final descent scree but got the lower bit of it.

We crossed to the TL somewhere near the Fohn Saddle turnoff but this probably wasn't necessary. The bush section down to Knob camp was slow. PTC alpine trip.

Beansburn - Rockburn trip. Doug solo. Found Beansburn completely remarked and cut with a new bridge. Rockburn also remarked and cut though with a few windfalls. Route to Fohn Saddle goes up a narrow dry creek bed. This give a very fast way through what would otherwise be fairly laborious tussocks. Note that it is necessary to travel down the TR of the creek draining Fohn Lakes due to slot gorge. There are also several slot gorges on the S side of Fiery Col.

Day 3 a short day to campsite at head of Hamilton as we decided the tops weather did not look too flash. Part of a St Arnaud range circuit.

OFTC party 9. Susan, Bridget, Paul, John, Fiona, Kerry, Brent, Lawrence, Doug. Track truncated but got back 3:15PM. The surprise is the unmarked waterfall.

A longer variation of the Ben More circuit.

Doug and Sue only. Labour weekend. Weather cloudy and also windy higher up, but visibility OK. Lots of snow still, good crampon conditions on second day.

Sue and Doug. Just downhill track but took 4 1/4 hrs to get up. Unexpectedly nice basin area and creek.

Perfect morning for this traverse. Cool and fine. Track truncated at Pt1875 but got back to car at old Bealey carpark at 13:50

Doug, Sue, Stu, Flo. First part of ascent route a bit scrubby. Bush section easy open bush. Final descent into Broad Strm down a great scree run. Found good marked track from bushline out to flats near road

Walked up to here in the afternoon after driving down from Chch. Traversed 4 basins to campsite under Sleepy Hollow. Some fresh snow on high points. Probably better to travel on the other side of Pt1546 in the last basin - looked grassier. Camped by a tarn not marked on map. Nice large overhanging rock nearby offers shade in the afternoon and somewhere cool to stash food.Day trip to visit Sleepy Hollow tarn. Too much snow to venture further. Fairly lazy day. Great spot except for continual aircraft noise. En route down to Caples found slightly larger tarn and reasonable place could have camped. No rocks though. Travelled down mostly open bush to Caples and up to Fraser track. On the main Caples track. Hut now privately owned by NZDA. Fraser track in poor condition and often hard to follow. Luckily accurately mapped so GPS very useful. Track markers fairly sparse and looking back noticed very few markers for down valley travelers.Up Fraser Valley. Great campsite on a dry grassy flat near stream.Nice campsite on grassy flat near stream.  Near last trees in valley.Quite a few sandflies.  Over Fraser Col Started traversing up slope on S side of col to avoid scrub. Seemed to be more scrub than previous trips here (25+ years ago). Traversed too low into Emily Creek - should have taken a line 40-50m higher. Emily Creek also steeper with more waterfalls than I remembered, but all can be bypassed. 

14-APR-06 15:57:10 Needed small amount of earthworks for space for a 2 person tent. Definitely not a camping friendly area Easter 2006. Doug and Sue only. Dry weather till the last hour but a bit cloudy at times. Interesting country as Sven said.Easter 2006. Doug and Sue only.

Nice spot sheltered among the matagouri. Dog Kennel: You would have to be desperate but it is as least dry. Dirt floor and no bunks. Old but very habitable hut. Obviously actively used by hunters.If travelling up valley ascend this scree to find track bypassing gorge.Possible camping but not very flat. Traces of ground trail in many places. Obviously well traveled. Fairly straightforward but would be a problem with high rivers. The gorge upstream of 'Scree' is spectacular.

Campbell Pass, Bijleveld Col, Hunts Creek

Move out of the gully up onto a small knob with a cairn. From here sidle left around easy tussock into large scree slope. Scree can be followed all the way to the valley floor.

N.B. The tarn on St James Range would be a great campsite.

CTC trip 21 people. Too many to name. Easy trip but great viewpoints from a different perspective.

Sue and Doug. Picked a fine spell to do this trip. Going was faster than expected. Thunderstorm in the area on the second night missed us but we found Judges dirty and our car clean when we got out. Mangerton tops well worth visiting. We were a bit worried about the route down here as the contours showed bluffs. Turned out ok with a good scree under the high bluffs and only one short steepish bit further down.

OFTC Wed trip

Track truncated but took 6 1/2 hours from lower Taipo. We started on the true right but would have been better to have started on the other side. Our route up the creek was constrained by high river flow so normally would probably be closer to the creek.

PTC trip of 8 except mostly CTC. Doug, Sue, Susan, Ron, Stu, Flo, Richard, Lynne great day with cool breeze but good views of cloud shrouded peaks from the top. Took the first scree route down as Lynne a bit slow. Back at cars 6:05pm. Track truncated at top

Doug only. Great weather blue sky trip. This is the downhill route only as found track more accurately. Took about 3 hrs from camp to Sutton with daypack.

Doug and Sue xmas trip 4 days. Day 3. Travelled up the true left of the Matakitaki and found the going there much faster than our last trip on the other side. Weather even more cloudy and totally clagged when we reached the first tarn. Navigated totally by GPS to D'Urville Saddle and arrived exactly at the cairn! Took the 'standard' route down from L Thompson for a change - a much superior route, mostly fast snow and later a nice smooth scree.

Descent is reasonable route. Some areas of regrowth around the 1000m mark, but mostly good traveling. A bit of windfall on the short flat section at the bottom.

Recently cut (2020) unofficial but quite followable.

Excellent and straightforward route to both Gloriana and Three Tarns. We climbed Gloriana from the other Maruia fork and then crossed the range to camp at Three Tarns. Note that in the creek below Three Tarn Pass it looks like the route lower down crosses the stream but actually it is on the TR all the way - the creek is mapped wrongly.

Ridge direct from summit Goat Hill looked tricky so went back a bit. Traverse generally easy. Two gullies to cross near final descent track. First quite deep and steep (need to cross exactly where shown).

CTC trip led by David Sutton. Bush bash down North Ridge. Scrubby at the top for a while and then slow but reasonable going the rest of the way. Got a bit tangled by the gorse out on the flats so crossed the Otira to get away from it. If the Otira high it might be better to bash through the tongue of bush where we first entered the paddocks.

CTC trip led by Sue. Doug, Stu, Flo, Andrea, Merv, Stephen Hoare Vance, David Sutton. Just after the first seasons snow but snow melted quickly as we climbed. Wind a bit cold in places but summit almost calm and warm.

Track truncated. Left carpark 7:50am

We actually got to this campsite around lunch time after continuing towards the Camel and turning back in strong winds and approaching storm clouds. Actually the storm passed by quite quickly but this was a great camp site anyway.

Beansburn - Rockburn trip. Doug solo. Found Beansburn completely remarked and cut with a new bridge. Rockburn also remarked and cut though with a few windfalls. Bottom of track to Park Pass difficult to find despite my marking it 15 years ago. Could only find two of my markers including the "Last marker" one. No sign of the orange ties that Susan mentions and nor could I find the markers I placed near the river. However once on the track it was well worn and easy to follow.

Rest of route split off but took about 5 hours to road via Rolleston River route.

Sloping site with snowmelt fed stream nearby. Camped here.Doug. Solo trip to FTF geocache. Perfect weather.

Doug. Track truncated but arrived back at car at 14:20. Stayed at hut but did a quick trip up to Moraine Flat before heading out. Despite dire warnings in the hut book Easy Stream was in fact easy.Doug and Sue. Track truncated but started from Klondyke Corner carpark at 8.20am and arrived at Avoca Hut at 3:15pm. Note that the traverse into Galillee Stream might be better done higher perhaps by climbing up the ridge from Jordan Saddle. Actual track was a rather steep boney scree.

Doug and Sue. We started at Kelly Shelter and went over Kelly Range to Julia Huts on the first day. Arrived just on dark and had to camp as hut full. Next day had a swim in the hot pools before going up Taipos Breast via the scree just up Mary Creek, down to Campbell Saddle and up over Bijleveld Col to camp in upper Hunts Creek. Last day out Hunts and down Kellys to car. Drizzle that day but others fine. Track truncated but arrived at upper Hunts Creek campsite at 3:10pm.

Pretty straightforward. Marking a bit sparse in places further up when misty

The crux is getting across Jumble Creek.

This is an excellent route. Good footing everywhere with no scrub and minimal tussock.

Went this way out on Sunday. Weather still pretty good, but a bit of breeze and some cloud hanging about

CTC trip. We started early so we had time to go up Mt Oates

Nice ridge traverse along to Williams Saddle. Lots of camp sites on ridge area.

Fast CTC party of 12. Weather was a bit misty at times but pretty good.

PTC trip of 8 led by Merv. Doug, Sue, Merv, Chris Horne, Chris Lever, Tony Oliver, Stuart, Dan Price. Perfect day. Rather slow trip 10 1/2 hours. Track truncated.

South Hurunui trip. Sue and Doug. Went to Upper Hurunui hut and camped as hut had DOC worker plus Jake the dog and is pretty grotty anyway. Next day to Lookout Peak and potter around Roche Saddle. We went up the Eastern spur because Sandy (DOC) said that was where they went. Proved to be not the case and we picked up the correct track on the way down slightly W of where she said. Doesn't really matter anyway as the bush is fairly open.

Great campsite on sandy bench. Reliable water and fairly sheltered.Doug solo. This is the second days log. Ascent was a cloudy day with clag and drizzle higher up. Finally pushed through the clag at the campsite area. Note: follow the road for a while rather than DOC's crazy trip start. Ascent day was perfect weather with summer conditions. Crampons needed only for final ascent section. Very little snow for early season.

A group of us did some work on this route. The map is quite wrong particularly on the W side.

Great campsite by tarn not marked on the map. CTC trip, Stu, Flo, Sue and Doug. Windy forecast didn't eventuate. Just a bit windy Sat and calm Sun. Found a great tarn campsite for the night.

Doug only. 3 day trip over Kelley Range and back via Dry Creek and Hunts Creek. Saw 1 Whio at about the 600m mark up Dry Creek.

Straight forward but a bit slow on the traverse from low to high peak(about 1 1/4 hrs) because of blocky travel. Traverse scree shelf under summit to gain easier ground higher up. Track split but took 6 1/2 hours in snow conditions.

The Broad Stream track has recently been re-cut by OFTC members.

CTC trip of 6. This log has been tweeked to show more recent variation on the route especially attempting to show where ground trails exist amongst the regrowth at upper levels.

Starting at the Kowhai Stream carpark, travelled up Kowhai Stream and then up the steep Spaniard spur to the hut.  Quick trip up to the summit. Returned via the 4WD track to the carpark. 

Weather was cloudy and occasionally drizzling for this leg. Very few views. Geoff kicked a zig zag of steps down to desperation Pass. Probably a good thing there was no visibility as it is very exposed there. PTC alpine trip.

Sue and Doug. Doug actually first went up via N Ridge and went back to get Sue and we both went up this way.

Day trip from Bivvy.

Travel up the 'hut' creek till the ground starts to steepen and then move up fairly clear ground eventually travelling on the crest of the spur above. When approaching the bluffs below the main ridge a way can be seen traversing ledges below the bluffs giving access to scree. Travel up the scree traversing towards Longfellow. Don't go directly up the scree to the low point above as there is an impassable gendarme that will force a descent again to bypass it.

OFTC trip. Doug, Bridget, Murray, Helen, Lawrence. Fairly scrubby lower down and last gully a bit tricky. Maybe consider going up Manson Creek and looking for a bush route up spur from about 800m mark.

This track has had several tweaks done from other trips and is now a fairly good route.

Very cold windy day. Route through scrub section is slow but OK as someone has cut the worst scrub sections.

Untracked but straightforward going.

This is a whole trip. There is quite a bit of documentation in the various gpx objects(better viewed in your desktop software).

Sue and Doug day tripped this from Paske Hut. The descent route was good except for a bit of bush bashing at the bottom. Probably the most direct route to Mt Paske despite the 100m height loss.

Doug alone. Downhill only. Uphill time was 9.00 to 12:00. This shows the 'easy' route through the bluffs.

OFTC trip. Bridget, Geoff, Murray, Helen W, Helen B, Doug

PTC trip 13 people led by Geoff Spearpoint. Fairly slow trip but 12 got to the high peak. Track truncated but back at cars 7.02pm

Went up the wrong scree as Scott is quite hard from that side and the traverse around is messy with loose steep scree interspersed with small rock buttresses. Both peaks are quite easy from the col between the two. Would have been better to go up that scree to start with though it would have been a bit of an epic uphill. It was a great downhill run. Scott is just scree nearly all the way to the top. Wilson is a bit easier by going up the ridge for a bit and then traversing boulders rightwards to a small scree slope through the slabs. The slabs give good traction upwards and the scree works for the downhill. Above this an easy traverse left and up to the summit.

There is a rough track through the scrub section

Doug and Sue. Starting at Pegleg flat. Aim for patch of scree visible from road. Scrub not too bad to here. Gully good going but steepens up a bit near the top. After this easy going. Need to pick way around narrow ridge higher up but mostly ok. Route down easy till scrub reached. Scrub a bit thick in places, but stick to the spur or slightly N of it (since cut a rough track through this). In the bush pick up an old track marked with yellow discs.

PTC trip. Only Phil,Merv, Geoff and Doug made it to the top in very windy conditions. Came down the valley to get out of the wind. Note the traverse out lower down to avoid waterfalls.

The faces above L Hope are easier then they look and either route is straightforward. Descent route is probably more direct. There is an impressive looking steep bit above the 2200m contour on the mountain but there is a series of ledges that leads through this quite easily. Summit area was steeper than I remembered.

Good camp site. Spent 2 nights here. Some went to Bonds Peak as well.

Doug and Sue. Fine weather with light wind. Bush down to Lucretia OK but a bit slow due to regrowth and patches of tree falls. Upper ridge easier than it looks - travel mostly on the ridge crest with only minor diversions one side or the other in places. Wonderful basin area above Lucretia bush with a few tarns that we didn't visit. Not sure if camping near tarns but probably ok.

Clear day, a bit of wind on top. On the Cattle Stream side there was a short slabby section at about 1650m needing care but the rest was a straighforward mix of snow and scree.

24-OCT-09 11:35:56AM OK camping here. Water looked fairly low later in summer.

Cloud and drizzle. Fairly miserable campsite on Mt gates. Route fairly straightforward with a section of steepish snow approaching Mt gates. Part of a PTC alpine trip.

CTC trip of 8. 22 km total distance, 2135 total height climb. Truncated track for tops portion as already have plentry of tracks there. Arrived back cars 6pm after 8 1/2 hours

Sue and Doug. Travelled to Avoca homestead on Sat morning and decided to try Otarama that day in case it rained Sun. Windy in places but we made it so Sunday was just a leisurely stroll around the 4WD track.

Route to Tarn Col poorly marked but followable. Descent to Tarahuna Pass very steep. Route up 'Amber Stream' to Amber Col very straightforward up pleasant valley.

Good animal / people track into the valley.

With care it should be possible to get around the lake dry foot.

CTC trip of 11 led by Dave. Doug and Sue and others. Got a bit tied up in the gully on the way up - need to exit this before the sides get too steep. This is just the uphill track. Downhill is nearby taking advantage of good fast screes. Got back at 5.40 pm.

Doug & Sue. Get away from Chch trip. Took some nice food for a change. Very little snow left. Didn't need ice axe or crampons that we carried. Perfect weather.

Doug and Sue. Anzac weekend. Decided Bernards trip would get rained on so we just did a 2 day here.

CTC trip of 12. Led by Bruce James. Descent route a bit messy. Scree OK sometimes and not others.

A bit tricky bypassing Pt1565. Great scree run after this.

There are a few waterfalls to bypass on this route.

11th to 13th November 2005. Susan, Ron, Kerrie, Peter, Ruth and Joy Schroeder. Long w.e. due to Show Day. Fairly straightforward tramp in excellent weather conditions, but fairly challenging coming down Raven Spur due to dense vegetation and an inability to identify precisely the correct spur to descend. After much effort we made the desired destination at the end of the spur but found descent difficult to the north or the west. Eventually came down a steep descent to the East to join up with the sidle track

Merv, Alan Stowe, Doug and Sue. This was a good way down from Red Peak and would make a better ascent route than the one we used. Got caught by surprise by the spectacular waterfall in the valley lower down, but easily bypassed via vehicle track a bit up valley

Bernards CTC trip. Sue, Flo, Stu + heaps of others. Not all went to Red Peak

There is no need to ford the Clarence at all as the upper reaches are mostly completely dry. Track truncated but arrived back at car at 15:08

Day trip Sue and Doug. 10.5 hour, 27.5 km day. Very hot in the afternoon. Blackball ridge very slow - not nearly as easy as the map would have you believe. Bush section fairly straightforward though a bit of regrowth higher up due to bush being rather stunted. Track truncated

Merv, Sue, Doug, Helen , Paul, Allen, Gary. Trip started via internal access on Swyncombe Farm. Walked up to campsite (found by Gary) and then climbed the peak after pitching the tents. Just made it back to campsite before dark, all pretty stuffed. Last section between low and high peaks a bit tricky and most turned back there. A bit windy on top but not as bad as forecast.

Route out from hut mainly follows stock tracks. Horse route is probably along the track across the scree above the hut to start with(higher than we went). This would avoid the moraine boulders.

Part of a St Arnaud Range traverse trip.

Very nice ascent on the Sudden Valley side. Traverse under 1653 a bit messy. Scree very loose and quite steep. Need to keep up near the bluffs where possible. Last bit of bush descent a bit messy with some lawyer mixed in with regrowth.

Just Doug. Left 9:30am and got back 5:20pm. Bush had a fair bit of regrowth which was slow going though not too drastic. There must be a better way than this one. The going improved higher up. Above the bushline easy going with virtually no scrub. Dropped into descent stream via long scree run. A bit bony at the top but fast going lower down. Descent stream straightforward all the way to Sudden Valley.

Route from Devils Den Biv.

Ian's description: We lost visibility at about 1500m on Tara Tama, but it was warm and there was no wind. The first part of the descent was slow, because all sorts of things that were smaller than a map can show kept appearing out of the fog. But progress picked up at about 1450m on the way down, and we dropped below the fog at about 1350m. The gully descent was good, sort of steep at the top but free of scrub. We saw a couple of chamois at the top of the gully.

Bush track down to the Taipo still easy to follow and only slightly overgrown in places.

Straightforward route but slow in places due to large boulderfields especially near Pt2096. Great views from summit including most of Cromwell in the distance. Surprising amount of snow around L Te Kohua including on our traditional route up Tuwhakaroria up onto the col. Good phone reception.

South Temple washed out by 94 floods. Track much changed - probably easier going.

The Dome. Ians route - truncated but Ian was back at the AP road at 16:21

Doug and Sue. Got a bit tangled in scrub near the start. Possibly better to get onto the spur proper just above Pt786. We had forgotten how easy the last bit into The Gap was - just a goat track. Sue didn't like the narrow bit of the spur below the gap.

Track above Upper Misery Hute is easy in open bush. Need to cross the col at the exact point as there is a bluff on the Hellfire side. The area under the tarn is more bluffed than the map indicates and the easiest way seemed to be as per the track or possibly even sidling more down valley. The track shown down the Hellfire gorge is not accurate as GPS reception was non-existent. Note that there is a couple of bad fords in here - low river route only. The track is rather exposed in a few places as well but otherwise stll fairly easy to follow. Would be a very difficult route without a track.

The bit near Mt Kerr is surprisingly steep.

Just Doug. Weather better than forecast - just a bit windy in places. No snow to speak of. Route fairly intricate but straightforward for the last 500m NE of The Gap

Day started off fine and warm but deteriorated to winbdy and occasional showers on tops. Bush to tops fairly open. Scrub reasonable with bits of animal track to follow. Very little snow. Last bit of route to Trent saddle is down a scree shute. Steepish but much easier than the surrounding scrub.

Sue and Doug. Perfect day after a fresh dusting of snow the day before. Completely new daytrip for us. We went up to the bridge too soon - there is a rough track up to the bridge quite close to under the bridge. Great campsites in the basins.

Day 2 very cold wind but found Rainbow Pass to be easier than expected. GPS track shows precise route through bluffs but on scree all the way.

Crux day for getting to glacier. Belays down steep exposed sections of ridge down to Ruth Stream. Crampons on very steep snowgrass and miniature dracophyllum. Part of a PTC alpine trip.

The crux of the departure from the Volta. Around the end of Beauty Ridge. A straightforward route with a couple of small gullies to cross just before the final corner. Much easier than expected. This route makes the Volta very accessible to experienced tramping parties.

A nice multi-pass trip through interesting country.

There is a good campsite with a good stream and enough flatish grass for 2 or 3 tents at 1478321 5250111

Second day to Lake Browning. Perfect weather.

Part of a trip that started via Mt Griffin.

CTC trip 10 led by Frank. Clagged in on top with cold wind. Sue turned back at top of gully with cold feet. Finally got visibility back near Trudge Col. Track truncated at Trudge Col. Total length 12.7 km. Trip times were 06:40 to 15:20

Straightforward route with only a bit of snow. Scree leading to Watson-Maitland pass somewhat loose and steep near the top.

PTC trip. Track truncated back at car 3:30pm

Straight forward walk to Wilmot Saddle. Perfect campsite here. Walked up Sisyphus after setting up camp. Part of a PTC alpine trip.

CTC trip 12 people. Trip split up with some slow and fast. Fast ones went on and down leading spur. Excellent route down scree and very open gully.
